Planner II/III

Website City of Brookings

The most beautiful little coastal city in the PNW

The City of Brookings, Oregon, is seeking a Planner II or Planner III to join its Public Works & Development Services team. Openings in Brookings are uncommon—this is a unique opportunity to live and work in one of the most beautiful communities on the Oregon coast. This position may be filled at the Planner II or Planner III level, depending on qualifications. Known as the “Banana Belt” of Oregon, Brookings enjoys a mild coastal climate, dramatic ocean views, easy access to redwoods and rivers, and an exceptional quality of life. If you are looking for meaningful professional responsibility paired with an unmatched coastal lifestyle, this position offers both.

This is an excellent opportunity for a planning professional who wants to take on meaningful responsibility, contribute to both current and long-range planning efforts, and play an important role in a small, collaborative organization. The recruitment will be open until filled.

This position offers the opportunity to work on a broad range of planning assignments, including review of land use and development applications, preparation of staff reports and findings, interpretation and application of the Land Development Code and Comprehensive Plan, and presentations to the Planning Commission and City Council. The role is well suited to a planner who is comfortable balancing technical analysis, public communication, and practical problem-solving in a local government setting.

Because Brookings operates with a small and collaborative team, this position also offers responsibilities beyond traditional planning work. In addition to current planning duties, the selected candidate will have opportunities to support cross-departmental projects and broader organizational initiatives such as contract management, grant administration, policy research, special projects, and coordination across departments. This is an excellent opportunity for a professional who values variety in their work and wants to build experience across multiple facets of local government service.

The position may also include participation in longer-range efforts such as comprehensive plan updates, development code amendments, and other projects that help guide the community’s future growth and development. With the potential for continued residential growth and community development activity, this is an exciting time to join the organization and contribute to thoughtful planning in Brookings.

The City is seeking a candidate with sound professional judgment, strong writing and presentation skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with applicants, residents, public bodies, consultants, and internal departments. The ideal candidate will be adaptable, organized, and ready to contribute where needed in a small-city environment where teamwork and initiative are highly valued. The Planner II level is appropriate for a professional with a solid foundation in land use planning who is ready to grow in responsibility and impact. The Planner III level is intended for a more experienced planner who can manage more complex applications, support code development, and work with a higher level of independence.

Brookings offers a rare combination of professional opportunity and exceptional quality of life. Located on the southern Oregon coast and known for its mild climate, the community provides access to dramatic coastal scenery, redwood forests, rivers, and year-round outdoor recreation. For planners who value both meaningful public service and place-based quality of life, Brookings is an outstanding community in which to live and work.

The City of Brookings offers an excellent benefits package and Oregon PERS retirement. Planning openings in Brookings are uncommon, making this a unique opportunity for a qualified candidate seeking professional growth, organizational involvement, and community impact in a remarkable coastal setting.
