2016 Awards of Excellence
in Economic & Community Development

 

Efforts by organizations and individuals to create more high-quality jobs, develop more vibrant communities, and generally improve the quality of life in their regions were recognized at the Oregon Economic Development Association’s 2016 Annual Conference held in Sunriver.

2013 Awards of Excellence
in Economic & Community Development

The Oregon Economic Development Association 2013 Annual Conference was held in Hood River.

Winners of the awards were selected based on innovative programs or practices in their respective categories. The award categories were:

  • Economic Development Leader of the Year

 

Marketing and Promotions

The Marketing and Promotions Award was presented to The City of Corvallis-Benton County Economic Development Office for its “Yes Corvallis!” initiative (www.YesCorvallis.org). A collaborative effort between multiple public and private entities committed to supporting business development in the region, the project developed a completely new brand identity which includes a new logo and tagline, “Innovate. Grow. Thrive.” The City of Corvallis-Benton County Economic Development Office launched its new brand identity and website portal in July, 2013. The project was led by Cleland Marketing and Boost Brand Solutions.

Outstanding Collaborative Partnership Award

The Outstanding Collaborative Partnership Award was presented to the North Marion Enterprise Zone. A partnership of eight government entities and organizations leveraged resources, time and expertise to form a new enterprise zone for three rural communities in the Mid-Willamette Valley. The participants in this project include a myriad of public and private economic development partners: the cities of Aurora, Donald and Hubbard; Marion County; the Mid-Willamette Valley Council of Governments (MWVCOG); Business Oregon; the Strategic Economic Development Corporation (SEDCOR) and GK Machine,which has already expanded its operations as a result of the new Enterprise Zone with an additional 109,000 square feet and over 60 new jobs.

Business Development Success Story

The Business Development Success Story was presented to Henningsen Cold Storage. The fourth generation family business, founded in 1923, is one of the largest public refrigerated warehousing companies in North America with nearly 43 million cubic feet of refrigerated and frozen storage space. The company has nine operations in six states, including facilities in Forest Grove, Portland and Gresham, and is expanding into the Mid-Willamette Valley. Partnering with NORPAC, Henningsen is building a new freezer storage facility which will result in over 30 new jobs, and help 260 different farmers.

Economic Development Leader of the Year

Jill Miles, National Recruitment Officer for the Oregon Business Development Department, was selected as Economic Development Leader of the Year. Ms. Miles began her career in economic development in 1991 and has spent the last seventeen years with the State of Oregon where she worked closely with local businesses and regional organizations on business recruitment, expansion and retention. Ms. Miles manages recruitments across many industries which include data centers, advanced manufacturing, distribution and logistics, and food processing. She has worked with hundreds of manufacturers, site selectors and real estate firms to help land manufacturers in Oregon, creating millions in investment, thousands of jobs and revitalization of our state’s economy. These businesses include Tillamook Cheese, ODS Health Plans, Les Schwab Corporate Headquarters, Facebook, IBM and Boise Cascade.

Legislators of the Year

In the final awards presented, the Oregon Economic Development Association acknowledged the leadership of Senator Lee Beyer and Representative Tobias Read as Legislators of the Year. Senator Beyer and Representative Read shepherded legislation that addressed OEDA’s top priorities: Job Creation & Retention, Industrial Land Supply, Capital Access and Infrastructure Capacity. These legislators listened to the association, its members and economic development partner organizations, and worked to find funding for industrial lands readiness and other economic development resources needed to support the work of Oregon’s economic development practitioners.
